Review - Awesomenauts

Did you, like many kids before and after you, dream about going into space one day, becoming an Astronaut? Get the fame and the fortune, the ladies, the gold, the wild Texan with a cowboy hat… wait, that’s not Astronauts, that’s Awesomenauts!

Awesomenauts is a little gem made by the guys and girls over at Ronimo Games, a studio most recognizable for their release of Swords & Solider which ranked up good scores from critics all around the globe, and yes, Swords & Soldiers was awesome (and there goes my attempt at going through this review with mentioning the “A-word”, oh well...)

If you watch videos of the game you might not really know how to put this game into a genre of sort, well to make it all easier for you the answer is MOBA, which is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, yes they got those now. The game also goes for a small amount of MSP, more correctly 800 of them buggers, but yes I can already say that you should stop reading this review and just go get it, or if you got PS Plus you can get it for … drumroll please… FREE!

If you’re still not convinced allows me to impress you with gritty details, every game is played on a 3 vs. 3 matches, meaning you have 3 players and the enemy has…? Correct! 3 players also! You’re good. So what do we need to use a lot of in a game like an MOBA game? No not frustration, or aggression, but Tactics! Yes! Tactical playing is the bread and butter of any MOBA game, simply because if your turret dies, you die, get it? You don’t? Oh I forgot to mention the turrets didn’t I? … My bad.
Ok, when you start up the game you get a small story and then, all of the sudden you are inside a spaceship, blasting your way to the bottom, which in this case is the startup point in the game, and as your spaceship heads towards the ground, a million miles and gunning, you get to try and pick up something called Solar, which are small dots spread around the map, but I’ll get back to those later on.

Each team has a turret to keep, caress and love, well at least keep it alive. But the enemy has one of those too, and your job is to …? YES! Go destroy the enemy’s turrets! While keeping sure that the enemy doesn’t get yours first! Manage to do this and you get PROFIT! …well you at least win and get all the ladies.
So Solar, solar is the in game currency for Awesomenauts, with solar in your pocket you can basically upgrade your characters with abilities or upgrading weapons etc. It is like with any game that has ever had an upgrade system; Awesomenauts doesn’t do anything revolutionary with this it just perfect as it is so there’s no need to really.

The graphics are amazing, think Crysis and Battlefield met up in a bar, had a baby, this baby didn’t turn out to be Awesomenauts, But the parents of this baby let the baby play a 2D Side Scroller, animated gem called Awesomenauts. You see it looks good for what it is, and that’s all you’ll need in a game like this, it works.
Another great thing with Awesomenauts is that you get the feeling like you are always being rewarded, for every single thing you do, and that feeling is bar none, the best feeling you get when you’re playing a game. You feel like that fat kid who got all the toys because his mother and father didn’t know how to hold and love him, so it’s like robotic love, a cold, metal hug! Is this making sense? It doesn’t matter does it because you know another great thing with Awesomenauts? If you play online and you don’t have that many friends, you know what the game does for you? It jumps in and plays it with you, how lovable is that? That’s just beautiful, so no online wait for anyone! And if your team loses, guess what? You get points too, and this means you can still rank up and not get annihilated every single time, you can grow slowly but surely.

If you like arcade games, 2d games, MOBA games, or if you just like to go into a game with friends and have fun, to kill a few hours or so this is your game. As mentioned early on in the review, it is currently 800 MSP on Xbox 360 but if you got PlayStation Plus it is FREE! So make you sure you check it out! See you on the battlefield soldier.
